Continental Divide

The Dog Stars

The Continental Divide is the high mountain barrier Hig crosses on his flight back toward the Erie airfield. Its snow, elevation, and narrow pass make it a real aviation hazard; on the return journey, crossing it also marks the approach to a place he has come to think of as home.

Mountain Barrier and Flight Risks

The Divide is described as a place where snow is almost always present and where an engine failure would leave a pilot with a long descent to the first clearings among the lodgepole pines. Before the collapse, Hig treated the crossing as routine, keeping about two thousand feet of clearance and flying high enough that he sometimes felt spaced out. The hazards were familiar, but not trivial: on either side lay Winter Park or Nederland, and below the route stood long-dead pines.

The Pass and the Return Route

On his return in the Beast, Hig aims for the pass’s low point, where an old Jeep road crosses the rocks and patchy snow. As the aircraft clears the ridge, the low country rises into view beyond it. The crossing leads toward the foothills and the Erie airfield, which Hig recognizes first by the airstrip near the radio tower that no longer blinks. The Divide thus anchors a specific route through difficult terrain rather than serving as a distant backdrop.

A Threshold Made Personal

The same mountain landscape appears from the ground when Hig and Pops walk up a frost-heaved highway: the sun hangs over the snow on the Divide, while grass, sage, and small poplars grow through cracks in the road. That contrast places the mountain between a damaged human landscape and signs of persistence in the open country. During Hig’s flight back, a memory of returning to his mother’s home makes the crossing feel different from the routine flights of the past. Beyond the Divide, he sees the Erie airfield and recognizes that returning to Bangley has become, in an unexpected sense, a return home. The mountain pass is therefore both a navigational threshold and the point from which the emotional meaning of that homecoming comes into view.
